After struggling with all the major academic subjects in his school days Steve Oatway took to being the class clown. His work is in a word hideous and I believe that is the point. The work is a grotesque, orange haired clown mask arranged on a child mannequin body. The face stands out with its macabre grin. The eyes are dark and sullen stare ominously. The child’s arms are short and the entire character bends forward at the viewer as if it is about to “attack”. The small, blood stained hands reflect the aggressive nature of the figure as well as its youthful, childlike nature. It is impossible to love such a being in the aggravated state that it is in. A single cross hangs from the clown’s ear possibly reflecting a faithful upbringing. The Child wears a single black and white spotted tie. Oatway reports that his teachers were at their wits end, he was often sent from the room and had his fingers and the backs of his legs caned. Although, nothing seemed to dampen his resolve to disrupt others around him. There is a strange sadness that resides deep in the figures eyes, a hurt burried within the darkness of the mask.
There is however a bright side to the artist’s tale, he formed a school yard gang with other misfits and resolved to dutifully protect those in the school who were disabled.
